Qualification/Training
Mr Robert Stuart qualified from University College Dublin in 1982. Subsequently he trained in General Surgery
in Ireland, the UK, and in Hong Kong. He is a fully qualified and accredited General Surgeon, with a special
interest in upper gastrointestinal surgery and has been a consultant in Glasgow since 1995. His major clinical interests include Bariatric surgery, endoscopy,
laparoscopic surgery, anti-reflux and gallbladder surgery, Barrett’s oesophagus and upper GI cancer. Mr Stuart
has expertise in minimally invasive endoscopic and laparoscopic procedures. He is an international
expert in upper GI surgery and has published over 70 original articles. His main research interests include
Barrett’s oesophagus, quality of life after surgery, mucosal cancer treatment and obesity surgery.
Mr Stuart trained in advanced laparoscopic surgery in the UK, Hong Kong and in Glasgow he has a large
obesity surgery practice. He is on the Specialist Register and is a member of the British Obesity Surgery
Society (BOSS), the Association of Upper GI Surgeons (AUGIS), and the European Association of Endoscopic
Surgeons (EAES). Mr Stuart is a Surgical Tutor on the advanced laparoscopic surgery EAES course at
Ninewell’s Hospital Dundeee. The main surgical options of Laparoscopic Gastric Banding (LAGB) and
Laparoscopic Gastric Stapling and Roux Y Bypass (LRYGB) are performed by Mr Stuart. Within the context
of a multidisciplinary team your needs are discussed and the approach individually tailored for you.
Patients are seen, before and after surgery, by the dietician and nurse specialist and have the
opportunity to meet and talk to others who have had it done previously.
Mr Stuart is happy to see new patients privately at his Bariatric Surgery clinic at Ross Hall Hospital in Glasgow.
